Can Frozen Yogurt and Ice Cream Live Together in Peace and Harmony – and Can Both Succeed?

We can’t tell you how many times we’ve been asked by friends, peers within the frozen yogurt machine industry, and people thinking of opening a frozen yogurt franchise whether we think the frozen yogurt industry will eventually put the ice cream industry out of business (or vice versa). Instead of responding with a definitive answer (because we really don’t know if we can say that frozen yogurt will put the traditional ice cream industry out of business), we simply ask them, “What do you think? Do you think the two products can both survive and thrive simultaneously?”

Apparently, this question is more widespread than we had realized. An article was published recently on USAToday.com regarding this very same topic. The article is entitled, “Can Frozen Yogurt and Ice Cream Coexist?” The very first sentence of the article says, “It is a question that has plagued many great thinkers for a number of years: Does the rise of “healthy” frozen yogurt signal the deal knell for the indulgent ice cream?”

One of the most interesting statistical tidbits from the article is a quote from Kevin Havelock, president of refreshments at Unilever. He argues that “the ‘froyo craze’ is beneficial for the ice cream market.” In other words, he thinks that the frozen yogurt industry is actually providing an overall boost to the frozen treat market in general.

At the present time, it’s true that the frozen yogurt industry makes up a small percentage of the overall frozen treat and ice cream sectors. But frozen yogurt is becoming more and more popular by the day, and its popularity is growing exponentially among the younger generation as well as among those who  are becoming more and more health conscious.

When you compare frozen yogurt to ice cream, frozen yogurt – without toppings – almost always has fewer calories and less fat than a comparable serving size of ice cream. In our opinion, the health appeal is one of the main reasons the frozen yogurt industry will continue to grow and expand. However, it’s also apparent that some people simply love traditional ice cream so much that they will choose it over frozen yogurt when given the option.

So, back to the original question: Can frozen yogurt and ice cream live together in peace and harmony – and can both succeed? The best answer to this question is probably “Yes.” Each product serves its own purpose.

It seems to us that the most important thing to keep in mind is that there are both frozen yogurt and ice cream options out there, and people will like being able to make a choice based on what they feel like eating that day. But, without a doubt, there’s room for both frozen yogurt and ice cream to be successful in the world of frozen desserts!
