A Few Good Reasons to Eat Frozen Yogurt and Soft Serve Ice Cream

Are you one of  those people who frequently crave frozen yogurt or soft serve ice cream? Do you ever pass a frozen yogurt franchise or restaurant that offers soft serve and have trouble steering away from it because your mouth starts watering every time you think about these delicious tasty treats? Well, guess what? There are lots of practical reasons for you to eat frozen yogurt and soft serve ice cream – especially if you are contemplating eating frozen yogurt and/or soft serve instead of a higher-fat or higher-calorie alternative. So if you’re looking for an “excuse” to eat frozen yogurt or soft serve ice cream as often as possible, here are a few reasons why you don’t have to deny yourself the indulgence:

1) Frozen yogurt and soft serve ice cream are much lower in fat than hard-packed ice cream. As the name indicates, frozen yogurt is made of yogurt – – not milk or cream. This fact alone explains why frozen yogurt is not as high in calories and fat as other decadent desserts. Similarly, soft serve ice cream is pumped with lots of air, which lowers its fat content substantially when compared to hard-packed ice cream. In fact, an article published on Forbes.com states that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies many types of soft serve as “reduced fat ice cream.”

2) Both frozen yogurt and soft serve ice cream contain calcium. The National Osteoporosis Foundation “NOF” states, “Getting enough calcium and vitamin D is essential to building strong, dense bones when you’re young and  keeping them strong and healthy as you age. Calcium and vitamin D are the two most important nutrients for bone health.” The fact that frozen yogurt and soft serve ice cream contain calcium is reason enough to eat them frequently! Kids of all ages love frozen yogurt and soft serve, so when they ask for it, you don’t have to feel guilty letting them indulge!

3) There are many health benefits associated with yogurt. For example, the enzymes contained in yogurt help the body digest food, and the good bacteria in yogurt are considered “probiotics.” Probiotics are microorganisms that may help with digestion and offer protection from harmful bacteria that help the body fight illnesses. According to FitnessMagazine.com, yogurt’s got power-boosting protein and bone-building calcium. It can also help you lose weight and fend off a cold.

If you are watching your fat and calorie intake, frozen yogurt and soft serve ice cream might be the best possible alternatives to hard-packed ice cream. But it’s important to remember that the toppings you add to your frozen treats can turn can turn an otherwise healthier choice into a high-calorie and high-fat treat. Therefore, to keep your frozen yogurt and/or soft serve on the healthy side, make sure you avoid adding sweet sauces, cookie dough and candy to your cup or bowl.
